What Is LPG?

LPG or liquid petroleum gas is a liquefied form of hydrocarbon gas. LPG is supplied in two different forms, propane or butane and is a colourless, low carbon, efficient fuel. LPG is used in many different appliances such as home heating, auto-gas vehicles, BBQs, cookers and much more.

LPG boils at low temperatures and to avoid it evaporating it is usually stored in steel pressurised bottles of LPG tanks.

How Does LPG Work?

Propane and butane both power appliances the same as they are both a form of LPG. LPG is just gas at under normal atmospheric pressure however more energy can be stored when LPG is in its liquid form rather than its vapour form. Liquefying can be achieved under moderate pressure and is then stored in a gas bottle.

How Do I Store My Gas Bottle?

Without knowing how to properly store and handle your LPG gas cylinders can be dangerous to yourself and your property. Cylinders should be stored in an upright position within a well-ventilated area far away from any sources of heat. Bottles Should also be kept clear of any fire exits or doorways. Propane should always be stored outdoors whereas you can have up to 30kg butane stored indoors.

It’s always a good idea to regularly check for any signs of damage especially on rubber gas hoses which can deteriorate over time. If there are signs of wear, contact a gas expert who can replace the hose with the correct parts. Having a gas detector installed near your gas cylinder storage will alarm you in the event of a leak or escaping gas.

What is the difference between propane and butane?

Propane and butane are both types of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) however they both have slightly different uses. Propane is most commonly used for homes that are off the grid for domestic heating, cookers, gas barbecues and other commercial appliances. Butane is typically used indoors for heaters, single burner cookers and camping.

What Gas Do I Need For My BBQ?

The type and size of the bottle depends on the type of regulator that comes with your barbecue which can be a screw-on or clip-on. If your BBQ has a clip-on regulator which is pushed on the top of the gas cylinder then you will need a patio gas bottle. If it has a screw-on type regulator which screws into the gas cylinder then you will need a propane bottle. Read our useful post on Top Tips For Your BBQ

How To Check The Levels Of Your Gas Bottle

An easy way of checking the levels of gas left in your bottle is to fill a jug of warm water, pour it down the side of the bottle. After 5 seconds use your hands to feel for a change of temperature on the bottle. The part that is cold to touch will indicate how much gas is left. If the bottle is warm the full way down it means your bottle is completely empty.
